Build-A-Bed Program
The Build-A-Bed Program provides children in Henderson County with a safe, comfortable place to sleep by supplying newly built beds, mattresses and essential bedding items. Each year, volunteers and community partners come together to build and deliver beds to local children in need, helping create a foundation for healthier sleep, greater confidence and future success.
We believe every child deserves a safe, comfortable place to sleep—because success begins with a good night’s rest.
Since launching in 2011, our Build-A-Bed program has brought the community together to ensure that no child in Henderson County has to sleep on the floor or share a bed due to lack of resources. This special project takes place each year during our annual build event in April, uniting volunteers, families, and partners for a day of hands-on impact.
Through the dedication of volunteers and strong local partnerships—including Habitat for Humanity of Henderson, the Housing Authority of Henderson, Audubon Kids Zone, and Henderson County Schools—we’ve made a lasting difference in the lives of local children. As of 2025, 292 beds had been built and delivered to children in our community, with an additional 20 beds constructed during the April 2026 build event.
Each bed is thoughtfully crafted by volunteers, who often include handwritten messages of encouragement on the support slats—adding a personal and uplifting touch for every child who receives one.
A unique part of the program is the opportunity for each child to be involved in the process. On build day, children are invited to attend the event and choose the color they want for their bed, allowing them to take pride in creating a space that is truly their own. This hands-on experience makes the day even more meaningful and helps foster a sense of ownership and excitement.
Each child receives a complete sleep solution, including a newly built bed, a mattress, and a “bedtime basket” filled with essentials such as sheets, pillows, blankets, hygiene products, and a stuffed toy—creating a warm, comfortable, and welcoming environment.
This program would not be possible without the support of more than 600 volunteers who have come together over the years to build beds and bring comfort, dignity, and hope to children throughout Henderson County.
